Day 196 – Selfish Service

Today’s Proverb – reporting from the beach!

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes,
but the Lord weighs the heart. Proverbs 21:2 (ESV)

You may believe you are doing right,
but the Lord judges your reasons.  Proverbs 21:2 (NCV)

This Proverbs reminds me of the notion that we must repent even of our good works.

We often – and often unconsciously – do good works as a form of negotiation, a way of controlling our universe, of serving ourslves. We serve someone so that they will serve us in return: like us, think well of us, take care of us.

We serve God so that He will bless us in return, or that He will save us in return.

We don’t realize many times in reality we are serving ourselves with our good works. I for one don’t realize it!

But since the Lord weighs the heart, HE knows!

And He can let me know.

Thanks be to God!
