Does anyone remember that guy Robert Tilton, the televangelist who was exposed by 20/20?
I watched him on occasion, mostly for amusement and also in horror that anyone took his heresy seriously and especially that so many were lead astray, were duped.
I recall how Tilton would put a prayer cloth right up to the camera and tell the viewers in a hideous shout that if they put their hand up to the TV, they would be healed (“in Jeeeezus name”). He’d even send you that blessed cloth (for a donation of only $149.99).
Today’s reading brought ole Robert T to mind:
God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.
Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” …
One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding. Acts 19:11-16 NIV
I wonder if Tilton got his idea from Paul and his script from these false healers?
Back in the day, I felt like shouting to the TV (I did call one of their prayer lines in anger once): ”Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?”
Fortunately, ABC’s 20/20 and the Trinity Foundation took care of the beating…
