When I read the Proverb today, I kept thinking about how it might apply to ME, to the CHURCH. Here it is:
Do not rob the poor, because he is poor,
or crush the afflicted at the gate,
for the Lord will plead their cause
and rob of life those who rob them.Proverbs 22:22-23 ESV
I think it means we can’t take advantage of the poor, especially in court (“at the gate” meant “in the court”). So we shouldn’t use the courts to take things away from the poor (their homes?) or to otherwise take advantage of them.
I don’t do that directly, but do I do so indirectly? Do I in some way contribute to the affliction of the poor? Does the church?
I don’t know. But I do know that God cares for the poor in a special way and will look out for them.
Lord, Show us to what extent we deserve having our own lives taken way by virtue of our negative impact on the poor. Amen
